Telford Win Battle for Silver

Team manager John Hassle TAC Veteran mens team made their team manager, John Hassall, very proud as they raced home in second place. Tony Power ran well under pressure in the nail biting final leg to guarantee silver medal position for the National Veterans Road Relays.

Denise Sanders got the women's over 35s team off to a good start, completing the first of the three 3 mile stages in 18m 29s. Gillian Pugh moved the team up from 13th to 7th on leg two with a time of 18m 47s, handing over to Cheralyn Evans, who ran a storming last leg in 17m 30s to bring the team home in 5th place out of the 28 teams taking part. This was the first time the Telford women had competed in the championship and was a highly creditable performance.

The pressure was on the men's over 40s team to improve on the bronze medals won in the last two years, a challenge made all the more difficult with two top runners out with injury. On the first of eight 3 mile stages, new member John Sanders got the team off to a good start in 16m 03s. In his own words Rick Hailey went off on leg two "a bit too quickly", taking the team through from 26th to inside the first ten within half a mile. He battled well to come home in 7th place in 15m 53s. The third leg saw highly experienced Greg Wilson run a very sound leg in 15m 49s, moving the team up to 4th place. Dave Talbot made another valuable contribution to the team effort with a fourth leg of 16m 09s, slipping just one place. The fifth leg saw Peter Plant moving the team back up to 4th with a cracking time of 15m 54s. Just when it seemed Telford might miss out on the medals, Dave Mansbridge ran a storming leg to clock the team's fastest time of 15m 26s and move them up into second place. His contribution cannot be overstated because it gave late sub Andy Smith on leg seven a cushion against faster runners. Despite some recent injury problems Andy ran a tremendous leg in 16m 19s and kept the team in sight of the medals in fourth place. Experienced man Tony Power ran one of the most exciting final legs ever, gradually pulling back the deficit on Tipton and Clayton-le-Moor and finishing with a storming last mile to pull the team through to second place with a time of 15m 34s. Yet another British Vets' Championship team medal for Telford AC, this time the silver with Bristol Athletic Club taking the gold.
