Claire Martin, returned from her superb performance winning
the World
Corporate Challenge in New York to pick up her first North Wales Cross
Country League win of the season in the league's second race of the year at
Treborth Playing Fields Bangor, North Wales.
Claire led the Telford AC team to a convincing team victory as she crossed
the line in 15.17 with Wrexham's
Caroline Harney of Wrexham second, repeating her position from the first
race in 15.58. Telford's Kim Green, last years Midland Womens league
champion took third place just 10 seconds adrift in 16.08.Colwyn Bay's
Isabel Redfern was 4th in 16.43, just 4 seconds ahead of Ruth Hetherington
from Wrexham. Denise Sanders, repeated her 6th place from the opening race
at Colwyn Bay as well as being the first over 35 in 16.53. Oswestry's Alison
Lavender, led the team to 4th place as the first under 17 finisher in 9th
overall in 17.20. Gobowen's Alison Whitelaw was the third Wrexham scorer in
10th, a repeat peformance of her Colwyn Bay result in 17.22. Birgit Eyke
15th (18.11) and Alison Tickner 16th (18.18) completed the Oswestry team
scorers, they were also the first over 40 and second over 35 respectively.
Barbara Ward of Oswestry was the second over 50 , just 8 seconds behind the
winner of her section. Although Telford won the team race on the day they
have 70 points and are well behind league leaders Wrexham who have 25 pts
after the first two races. Oswestry are third overall, 86 pts with Colwyn
Bay 4th (93), Prestatyn are 5th (94) and Eryri are 6th (147). Oswestry won
the womens veterans team race with just 17 points and now lie second
overall, behind Wrexham.
Oswestry's Doug Morris won the over 70 mens race in 22.30 with exactly 2
minutes to spare over his nearest rival.
Shrewsbury's Mike James notched up another second place, following his
superb run in the league opener at Colwyn Bay, James, was second to Eryri's
Welsh international Alun Vaughan, who also won this race last year. The two
ran together for the first two laps on the undualting course on the banks of
the Menai Straits. Vaughan, from the host club, got away to come home in
28.37, just 11 seconds ahead of James who is now the overall league
leader.Clive West from Buckley, 29.19, was third, having improved from 5th
in the first race. Paul Lambert, from Deeside was 4th in 29.27 with Colby
Kneale, of Wrexham, last years overall league runner up was 5th in 29.44.
Greg Wilson led the Telford AC team home in 10th place repeating his placing
from the first race, he was also the first over 45 to finish. Rick Hailey
was the first over 50 to finish in 17th overall, improving from 28th in the
first race, whilst his TAC team mate Malcolm Dawes was again the first over
55.
Eryri finished runners in 6th and 7th position making the most of home
advantage to win the team race on the day with 117 points ahead of overall
leaders Wrexham, second with 125 pts just 2 ahead of third placed
Shrewsbury. Shrewsbury packed 4 runners into the top 22 and 6 in 34 to get
the better of their Shropshire rivals Telford AC who had to settle for 4th
with 145 pts whilst Oswestry were 6th in Division 1. Maldwyn Harriers were
4th in Div 2, with Bridgnorth the other Shropshire club, 10th in the second
division. Telford won the veterans team race by one point with Wrexham
second and Shrewsbury third.
