National Road Relay Champs

Ladies Start Telford Athletic Club womens team combined well to produce the club's best ever result in the National Road Relay Championships held in Sutton Park, Sutton Coldfield. The Telford quartet finished 7th out of the 78 complete teams that finished,in 61.19, less than 2 minutes behind the winners and just over a minute behind 3rd place. The previous Telford AC performance came in 2004 when the squad were 15th running 62.33 and last year they were 28th running 64.50.

Claire Martin, fresh from her World Corporate Challenge victory in New York, ran the opening leg in 14.45, finishing 10th just 2 seconds outside her previous best set in this years Midland Relay Championships over the same course. Kim Green, who such an excellent run in the recent Great North Run produced a new personal best of 15.04, 4 seconds quicker than her Midland run to move Telford up to 5th. Louise Taylor who has just returned from New Zealand, ran a superb leg of 15.18 to move the Shropshire club into the 3rd place. Julie Kirby ran the fourth and final leg in 16.12, 13 seconds quicker than her previous best to bring Telford home in their highest ever placings in a National final.

Birchfield Harriers won in 59.33, with Aldershot second in 59.39 whilst Charnwood were 3rd in 60.17. Other top ten placings were 4th Chester Le Street 60.55, 5th Sutton Coldfield 60.55, 6th Sale 61.04, 7th Telford 61.19, 8th Bristol 61.24, 9th Bedford 61.45 and 10th Highgate 62.19.

Denise Sanders 18.49 and Sarah Mackness 17.45 ran for the B team.

Dan Lewis Telford's mens six stage team finished 61st in 2 hours 1 minute and 56 seconds, out of the 73 teams that qualified for the finals. Wayne Dashper ran the opening leg in 19.25 before he flies out to race the Washington Marathon to represent the Royal Marines. Chris Bagshaw ran the second leg in 19.38, with Dan Lewis(pictured right) having the fastest leg of the day in 19.24. John Sanders ran the 4th leg in 19.44 to bring the team home in 54th before Steve Needs ran the 5th leg in 20.41 improving one place to 53rd before Lee Aston ran the final leg in 23.04.
