Birmingham Cross Country League

Telford Athletic Club enjoyed one of their best ever results in Division One of the Birmingham and District Cross Country League. The 4 division league includes over 50 teams with the top 13 in the first division. Competition is as tough as any league in the country as the first division includes two of the country's top university teams with Loughborough and Birmingham attracting students from throughout the country because of their running reputation.

In the 3rd fixture of the season at Coventry the Telford squad finished 4th team, led by Melbourne bound Chris Davies winning his second successive race but importantly behind Davies the 16 strong Telford squad packed well with 6 men in the top 62 and as show of their strength in depth they had 11 in the top 100. This is a massive improvement on the equaivalent fixture last season , when the first scorer was 30th and the team had 6 in the first 100 scoring 463 points to finish 12th putting the club deep into the relegation zone.
This season the team are now in a much healthier 6th place with just one race to go.

Chris Davies had a comfortable victory on a tricky course, generally flat but with several muddy patches especially on the tight corners. He set off in determined mood and quickly established a lead over the chasing pack which increased to 10 seconds at the end of the first lap extended it on the second and eventually won by 9 seconds as he eased home in 27.05 ahead of the Birmingham University pair of Luke Gunn and Richard Kay. Nick Andrews from Stirchley had one of his best ever races as he finished 24th,in 29.17, improving from 61st in the previous race. After taking the first two laps steadily, Andrews moved through on the final lap finishing with plenty to spare and intentions of even higher finishes to come in the future.

Paul Ward improved 9 places to finish 40th in exactly 30 minutes and just 4 seconds ahead of team mamte Dan Lewis 41st. Will Joyce showed a return to form in 47th, 30.19, whilst Ioan Illie finished the 6th scorer in 62nd, 30.54. Three Telford runners had been battling throughout the race for the 6th place and over the second half of the last lap Illie moved ahead of team mates Greg Wilson 70th,31.08 and Rick Hailey 72nd,31.11. Peter Plant was the next man home in 80th 31.36 ahead of Kevin Fisher 94th, 32.14 and Dale Wilkinson completed 11 men in 100 in 100th position in 32.22. Richard Andrews completed the B team in 128th, as the B team ( the second 6 scorers) were 3rd on the day.

Other Telford finishers were 140th Malcolm Dawes 34.58, 142nd Jamie Davies 35.12, 173rd Ian Beattie 41.05, 174th Alan Hodgkiss 45.33.

Birmingham University won the team race on the day with 61pts, Loughborough University were second with 87 pts and Tipton Harriers were 3rd with 113 with Telford 4th with 215. Host club Coventry were 5th with 240, Cheltenham 6th,292pts.
