Chris Davies continued his comeback from long term injury with another pleasing performance as he finished 10th in the First Division of the Birmingham and District Cross Country League at Coventry on Saturday.Running for his club, Telford AC, in one of the highest quality cross country leagues in the country, Chris Davies from Eaton Constantine, knew this would be his sternest test yet. Aiming for the top 20, in a race featuring many international athletes, Chris was determined to treat this as a tough training session, rather than a race and estimated that he was running at about 90% effort. In the very wet and muddy conditions Birmingham University's Frank Tickner ran away from the strong field to win with considerable ease.

With intense competition between the strongest teams in the 13 strong league, the university teams from Loughborough and Birmingham, vying for places in their respective teams for the University Championship. In addition Tipton Harriers the league leaders are always strong and there was a good turn out by hosts Coventry Godiva making the field was the strongest of the season so far.

Will Joyce ran really well to place 35th and the second Telford AC scorer, equalling his position in the previous race at Gloucester, but the top 50 in this race was much stronger. Wayne Dashper was the 3rd scorer in 42nd with Chris Bagshaw finishing 60th his highest placing of the season. Dale Wilkinson followed up his impressive run in the Shropshire championships with his first Birmingham League outing of the season with another good run in 111th, the 5th scorer. Paul Williams completed the scoring 6 in 114th, delighted with his highest finish of the season, 16 places better than his last Birmingham League outing. Nick Andrews was 121st, Malcolm Dawes was 136th, with Ian Beattie 166th and Alan Hodgkiss 169th completing the line up.

The team finished 10th on the day with 372 points, but just 59 points behind 7th place. This puts them 9th overall in the league, but comfortably 400 points clear of 11th. With just one race to go Birmingham University are just one point ahead of Tipton Harriers, with Loughborough University a further 100 points adrift.
