Telford AC's Dave Mansbridge was the leading Shropshire runner in the North Wales Cross Country League at Lilleshall National Sports Centre on Saturday in 33.25. In glorious October sunshine, Mansbridge who finished 2nd just 9 seconds behind the winner, Clive West from Buckley in 33.16, was with the winner till half way round the fourth and final lap. Although delighted with his performance, after finishing 3rd in the recent Bells of Pattingham multi terrain race, he was just a whisker away from repeating a victory in the equivalent North Wales race in Telford 10 years ago. Steven Henshaw from Deeside was 3rd in 33.36 whilst Wrexham's Mike Weedall was 4th and first over 50 in 33.38,with Deeside's leading under 20 Ricky Challinor 5th in 33.40. Telford AC's second scorer Greg Wilson, the British over 50 champion opened his cross country season finishing 6th in 33.44. Rick Hailey in 11th was Telford's 3rd scorer helping them to team victory with 97 points, but after their disasterous team score at Colwyn Bay in the opening fixture they are still 5th overall in Division One.
Shrewsbury Athletic Club, who finished second team at Lilleshall with 137 points, now have a healthy overall lead of almost 200 points after the first two races. Peter Ball led the strong Shrewsbury squad home as he finished 13th, 34.45, with last season's overall over 40 runner up Kevin Francis the next man home in 18th, 35.13, whilst Andy Yapp the third scorer was 23rd, 35.44. Hayden Jones led the Maldwyn Harriers home in 44th, 36.55, whilst Nick Blake led the Oswestry Olympians home in 75th, 38.57 and Dave Wilde was the first Bridgnorth Ac finisher in 111th, 41.45.
In the second division league table, Oswestry finished 4th on the day scoring 583 points, they are now 5th overall after 2 races, Maldwyn were 7th on the day with 646 pts, 10th overall, whilst Bridgnorth were 12th on the day with 922pts and are now 12th overall.
Telford AC won the veterans team race scoring just 11 points on the day they liw 5th overall, whilst Shrewsbury who were second on the day with 31 points lead overall with just 54 points. Maldwyn Harriers veterans were 10th on the day with 127 points. Oswestry veterans, 11th on the day and are 11th overall, whilst Bridgnorth were 15th on the day and are 13th after the first 2 races.
Oswestry's Josh Ogden, last season's Under 17 champion, looks set to retain his title after a comfortable victory in 20.17. Telford's Chris Lewis, the only other Shropshire under 17 on show was 10th in 26.27.
Marilyn Kitching won a close womens race with just 2 seconds to spare in 22.08 over second placed Caroline Harney from Wrexham, the winner of the opening race at Colwyn Bay. Tammy Lewis Jones from Colwyn Bay was 3rd in 22.40 whilst Oswestry's Kate Keenan improved one place from the opening fixture to have the distinction of being the first Shropshire finisher in 4th, 22.56. Wrexham's Emma Parry was 5th in 23.02 whilst Shrewsbury's international fell runner, winner of the recent Breidden Hills Race was 6th in 23.07. Denise Sanders led the TElford team home in 10th and first over 40, in 24.02.
Wrexham comfortably won the team race with just 21 points, whilst Oswestry were the leading Shropshire team finishing 6th with 68 points as Telford finished 7th with 102 points.Shrewsbury AC were 6th in Division 2 with 156 points.
The next North Wales League takes place at Treborth Playing Fields, Bangor on Saturday 24th November.
