Birmingham Cross Country
Gloucester

09-Feb-2008

Telford Athletic Club produced a tremendous result in the final Birmingham League cross country race of the season as they finished 8th out of the 16 competing clubs in the first divsion of this high quality league, on a dead pan flat course in Gloucester. The final race clashed with the final North Wales League race at Oswestry so the club were without, one of their leading runners Chris Bagshaw, who was in the running for indidual honours in the N Wales League.

The club saved their best till last as 8th is their highest team result of the season and gave them an overall finishing position of 12th, some 300 points clear of the bottom 3 who are all relegated. Owls, of Leicestershire won the overall league award making a welcome change from the usual domination by Loughborough University 2nd, Tipton 3rd or Birmingham University 4th. The 3 relegated clubs were City of Stoke, Wolverhampton and Bilston and Kidderminster and Stourport.

Chris Davies made a welcome return to action after a short injury lay off, to give the squad a real boost. Although Chris was not running flat out he was able to support some of the Telford runners and help them through difficult patches in the race. He ran with County Champion Chris Rimmer for part of the race and helped him through to lead the team home in 31st, then supported the next man home Will Joyce who came 35th before finishing in 37th place himself. Greg Wilson, the recently crowned Midland over 50 champion was next home in 62nd before Rick Hailey took 96th and Richard Lucock the find of the seasaon finished next in 105th. Other finishers were Paul Williams 109th, Simon Daws 121st, Dale Wilkinson 135th, Chris Talbot 162nd, Malcolm Dawes 171st and Paul Sanderson 172nd.

Midland Womens Cross Country League

TAC Ladies

Telford Athletic Club made it a hat trick of league titles as they won the Midland Womens Cross country league for the third consecutive year. In the final meeting of the season at a flat and fast grassland course at Plock Court, Gloucester Telford made no mistake as they won the league title by 38 points ahead of Birchfield in second and Birmingham University in third. In addition the two leading Telford runners Claire Martin and Kim Fawke collected individual medals as first and second in the league overall. In fact these two super consistent athletes have finished first and second for the last three years and Kim Fawke has been in the first two for 4 consecutive years winning the individual title in 2005.

Claire from Aqueduct who had won all previous races this season as she had done at all 4 races the previous season was denied an 8th consecutive victory by coincidently the last athlete to defeat her in this league. Laura Kenney of Sutton Coldfield beat Claire in the final race of the 2006 season at Cheltenham and it was Laura again who got the better of Claire in the race at Gloucester winning in 21.54. Claire came home second in 22.22 whilst Kim was third in 22.42. Sian Davies was the next home in 16th in 24.57 with Nellie Sanders completing the line up in 24th in 25.49.
